Me and one other designer (Justin Sucara) where tasked with dividing the shots and creating the red energy for this Comcast spot. We used After Effects to track and composite shots. The energy was a mix of a multitude of plugins, most notably the Trapcode suite and GenArts Sapphire. Once we had client approval all shots where rendered out with alphas so they could be placed into Flame for compositing with the final Color-corrected footage. The Challenge came in getting the energy to work at multiple time-scales, so we as animators could slow down and speed up the energy with the footage.
